In 2004 UNESCO launched the innovative project “Network of Creative Cities” in which new participants from different countries are selected each year following a contest through a call for proposals. The cities in the network are distributed in seven creative areas that are recognised as an important factor in their development. Participation in the network allows them access to best practices, exchange of experience, knowledge and resources, and simultaneously makes them visible worldwide as creative centres in the corresponding area. Up to 2015, the cities in the network counted 69, whilst another 47 joined during the same year, whereby their contacts were not limited to the selected creative field, but also connect with other cultural and creative industries (CCIs) through participation in joint projects, innovative clusters, and discussing and formulating international policies to support and manage the CCIs. In 2014 Sofia became part of the network in the area of film. You can look at Creative Cities Network Mission statement HERE . Member cities are recognised as:
  • Creative hubs” that promote socio-economic and cultural development in both the developed and the developing world through creative industries
  • Socio-cultural clusters” connecting socio-culturally diverse communities to create a healthy urban environment.
