In Sofia, there are three educational centres (two universities and one college) that offer certified expert training in film.
The National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) “Krastyo Sarafov” is an authoritative National University, which offers classical methods of tuition in all subjects that prepare young people for creative professions in theatre and film. Teachers have been known for decades, names that have linked their lives with these two arts, and are backed by numerous creative and research projects. In NATFA, academic and traditional atmosphere is readily felt. It starts from the first drama school N. Masalitinov, associate of Stanislavsky founded in Sofia in 1925 at the National Theatre. It runs through the formation of the State Higher Theatre School in 1948, which in 1954 became – The Higher Institute of Theatrical Art “Krastyo Sarafov”, but later renamed the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov” in 1995. As the most significant academic centre for theatre and film in Bulgaria, NATFA is member of important international organisations such as SILEKT (International Association of Film and Television Schools) ELIA – European League of Institutes of Arts, and UNIMA (the international association of schools of puppet theatre). The Academy is a member and founder of the International Association of Theatre Schools for UNESCO – ITI.
The Department “Film, Advertising and Show Business” of the private New Bulgarian University (NBU) offers students training in drama, directing and cinematography for film and television, visual arts, graphic design, advertising, animation, photography and more. The lecturers are prominent contemporary Bulgarian artists who, along with their intensive creative programme coach students by means of innovative, practice-oriented methods. Audiovisual works that were created at the NBU are periodically presented in national and international forums and festivals. The priority project of the Department is the “Cinema Club NBU”.
The Private Professional Art College in Sofia offers a two-year training programme in film and television, photography and animation. Many students, who have successfully completed the Art College, work in the electronic and press media, film, photography and animation studios. Some of them have created their own private businesses in the audiovisual field. Those who wish to continue their education are taken straight into the 3rd course of the NBU to obtain a bachelor’s degree and diploma of higher education. Short video HERE
On 01.12.2014, Sofia joins the network of creative cities of UNESCO, and was awarded the title "City of Film". The certificate was presented by the Director General of the International Organisation Mrs. Irina Bokova, the Mayor of Sofia Mrs. Yordanka Fandoukova
