Film Organisations
There are many professional organisations for artists and organisations in the area of film as an industry, media art and expert community in Sofia. Here is brief information about each of them.

  • The Executive Agency at the Ministry of Culture and National Film Centre (NFC) implements the State policy in the area of film. The NFC coordinates and supports film production and producers, distributor’s activities and film exhibitions countrywide. The financing and production, distribution and presentation of Bulgarian films at home and abroad.
  • The Bulgarian National Film Archive (BNFA) is designed to protect, restore, and store films, and related to cinema non-cinematic archival values of national and world art; all types of audiovisual documents with documentary-historical and artistic value; the processing of funds through cataloging and creating the appropriate documentation for film; the use of funds for scientific and research work; showing films for educational and cultural activities.
  • The Union of Bulgarian Film Makers (UBFM) is a professional organisation, which is involved through its members in the formulation of national plans, laws, patterns and solutions for the Bulgarian film and audiovisual arts. Established in 1934, today the Union represents its structures and members in international organisations (FERA, FIPRESCI, ASIFA, CIFEJ, UNI-MEI / EURO-ME) and protects their interests. The Union members are organised into guilds of these creative professions: film directors, cameramen, scriptwriters, actors, artists, film critics, animators, composers and sound engineers, editors, legal, economic and technical specialists in the field of cinema. The UBFM also releases special editions “Film Art”, “Film News” and “Cinema”.
  • The Association Bulgarian Film Sound (SBFZ) brings together sound engineers who work in the field of feature films, television, and documentaries. Some of the most prominent and active professionals in Bulgaria, who worked in sound recording of almost all Bulgarian and foreign films shot here in the last decades, are members of the Association.
  • The Bulgarian Association of Independent Cartoon Animators (BAICAA) – “Proyko Proykov” brings together some of the most creative contemporary Bulgarian animators. The official site of the Association provides extensive information about animation films in Bulgaria and the world.
  • FILMAUTOR is a Bulgarian organisation for collective management of copyright and related rights in audiovisual works. The Organisation has more than 1,500 members – directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, art directors, animators and producers of audiovisual works. FILMAUTOR is a member of CISAC – the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, and has contracts on mutual representation with 27 related organisations for collective management of rights worldwide.
  • The Balkan Documentary Centre for Audio-Visual Arts (BDCAVA) is an initiative of the production company AGITPROP. The Centre’s team works to support contemporary documentary film on the natives of the Balkans by providing a platform for cooperation in film and social projects.
  • The Bulgarian Association of Film, Television and Radio Writers (BAFTRS) has brought together into its membership prominent Bulgarian artists. These are united by a common purpose and coordinate activities to control projects processes in the field of audiovisual production, distribution, regulation and education in Bulgaria and abroad. They also support and maintain high standards in scriptwriting, protect their professional interests, promote the development of creative abilities, and establish contacts with other artists and similar organisations and institutions in Bulgaria and abroad.

Sofia creative city cinema UNESCO

On 01.12.2014, Sofia joins the network of creative cities of UNESCO, and was awarded the title "City of Film". The certificate was presented by the Director General of the International Organisation Mrs. Irina Bokova, the Mayor of Sofia Mrs. Yordanka Fandoukova
